stride piano (1929)

This is a classic stride improvisation using a simple theme in a classic song form (AABA). The simple theme of the A section is contrasted by interesting improvisations in the B sections. Notice the accuracy of his playing, and how he seems to have such fun while playing. He had a natural comic personality and it shows in this performance. Also notice the interesting ending, where it sounds like the music becomes unwound. This recording is a good example of the rapid boom-chuck left hand pattern in fast stride performances. The pattern remains relentless to the end. The last few measures show a high level of independence between hands. Also notice how he uses the full range of the piano.
